In a major political move ahead of the 2027 elections, leaders of the old Aba Division—comprising the influential Ukwa-Ngwa bloc—have called on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, to contest for the governorship of Abia State.

During a courtesy visit to Kalu in Umuahia on Thursday, the leaders expressed unanimous support for his candidacy, citing his exceptional legislative achievements and capacity to mobilize broad-based support across the state.

Ukwa-Ngwa, a powerful political constituency made up of nine out of Abia’s 17 local government areas, spans parts of Abia South and Abia Central Senatorial Zones. The areas include Obingwa, Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Osisioma, Aba North, Aba South, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West.

Leading the delegation, Elder Godwin Nna—a former Obingwa Council Chairman and Commissioner—emphasized that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to take over Abia State in 2027.
“We have come to urge you to lead the charge for total APC dominance in Abia,” Nna said. “With leaders like you, APC has no reason not to govern the state. Your track record gives us confidence that you can mobilize our people to reach the Promised Land.”
Other prominent voices within the delegation, including former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, and former Information Commissioner, Sir Don Ubani, echoed similar sentiments.
Azubuike, a former House of Representatives member for Aba North and South Federal Constituency, praised Kalu’s legislative excellence and unwavering commitment to the empowerment of Abia’s citizens and Igbo land.
“We are proud of you,” Azubuike said. “As a former legislator myself, I can objectively say you have performed excellently. Ukwa-Ngwa stands firmly behind you.”
Sir Don Ubani added his voice, thanking Kalu for the empowerment initiatives that have brought pride to Abia State and the Southeast. “We appreciate your contributions, but we, like Oliver Twist, ask for more,” he remarked.
In his response, Deputy Speaker Kalu expressed gratitude for the support and called for collective efforts to ensure APC’s victory in 2027. He pledged to continue working for the empowerment of Abians and to further strengthen APC’s position in the state.
In a related development, the Uwaoma Support Group, led by former State House of Assembly member Hon. Abraham Obah, also pledged their commitment to Kalu and the APC’s success in Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituencies.
“We are fully behind you,” Obah said, assuring that the APC would perform strongly in the next election based on Kalu’s stellar record.
Kalu, in turn, reaffirmed his dedication to the strategic repositioning of the APC in Aba. “We will shut down Aba when the time comes,” he declared, recalling his personal ties to the city where he grew up, studied, and conducted business.
The growing momentum behind Kalu’s potential candidacy signals a significant shift in Abia’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
