At least 23 soldiers have been killed following a deadly attack by Boko Haram militants on a military base in Chad’s volatile Lake Chad region.
According to the Chadian armed forces, the insurgents launched the हमला overnight on a military post located on Barka Tolorom island, leaving 26 other soldiers injured in the assault.
The military said it eventually repelled the attackers after intense fighting, adding that a significant number of the militants were neutralised during the operation.
The Lake Chad basin, which borders Chad, Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, has long been a hotspot for Boko Haram activities, with insurgents frequently targeting military installations and civilian communities in the region.
Authorities described the attack as part of a continuing wave of violence by extremist groups seeking to destabilise the region, which has endured years of insurgency and humanitarian crises.
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby condemned the нападение, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and reaffirming the country’s commitment to combating terrorism.
The latest assault underscores ongoing security challenges in the Sahel region, where militant groups continue to exploit porous borders and weak state presence to carry out cross-border attacks.
