Governor Alex Otti of Abia State on Thursday officially launched the Abia State Security Trust Fund (ASSTF), reaffirming his administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Speaking at the event themed “Building a Safer Abia,” Otti emphasized that security must be a collective responsibility involving government, citizens, and the private sector. He noted that while force is necessary, social investment is equally vital in creating safe environments.
The governor recalled the launch of Operation Crush shortly after assuming office in May 2023, a campaign aimed at reclaiming communities from criminal control. The administration also enhanced security with logistics support, vehicles, and the revitalized Homeland Security office, which now operates with improved intelligence and autonomy.

Highlighting Abia’s relative peace today, Otti stressed that “security is expensive, but inaction costs more.” He called on individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute to the fund, which is backed by law and intended to provide operational tools, intelligence technology, and a real-time quick-response center.
He promised transparency and accountability, stating that all donations would be prudently managed and regularly reported.
The Minister of State for Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, praised the initiative, noting that enhanced security in Abia would positively impact national stability. She urged public vigilance and collaboration with security agencies.

Stanley Obiamarije, ASSTF Board Chairman (represented by Vice Chair Johnson Chukwu), assured that the fund would operate as a public-private partnership to equip and support security agencies. He stressed transparency and encouraged corporate and community support as part of their social responsibility.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief John Udeagbala, advocated a grassroots security strategy dubbed “See it, Say it, Sort it” and proposed allocating 1% of the state’s GDP to security, funded through a transparent levy.
Hon. Alex Ikwuechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, praised the state’s inclusive and practical governance approach, noting its positive impact on security.
Retired Navy Commander Macdonald Ubah, the governor’s security adviser, described the initiative as a strategic step to sustain peace while easing the financial burden on the government. He emphasized that a secure Abia is foundational to long-term development.
