The Enyimba Supporters Club has officially withdrawn from attending today’s highly anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Rangers International, citing serious safety concerns.
The decision follows intelligence reports suggesting potential threats to their members’ safety at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
In a statement, the club emphasized their commitment to protecting their members, stating, “We love our team and live for moments like these, but we cannot put the lives of our members at risk.”
The withdrawal rekindles memories of last year’s Oriental Derby on Sunday 9th June at the same venue, where a controversial penalty awarded to Rangers in the 107th minute sparked protests from Enyimba players. The ensuing chaos saw fans invade the pitch, leading to violent attacks on Enyimba players, officials, and supporters, with several hospitalized.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, with a 25,000 capacity, was overcrowded with an estimated 40,000 spectators during the incident, raising serious concerns over safety and crowd control.

Despite the gravity of last year’s events, Rangers International has remained silent on the matter, further fueling Enyimba FC supporters decision to stay away from today’s fixture. Also Rangers international football club alleged they were also attacked too at the first leg this season at Enyimba FC stadium fueling speculation of a reprisal attack on Enyimba supporters club today.

The historic rivalry between Rangers and Enyimba is known for its passionate and intense atmosphere. However, incidents of violence have repeatedly raised questions about matchday security at NPFL venues.
As the NPFL strives for greater professionalism and international credibility, ensuring the safety of players, officials, and fans remains a pressing challenge.

Today’s match, overshadowed by the absence of Enyimba’s vibrant supporters, serves as a stark reminder that in football, safety must always come first.
