The British High Commission in Nigeria has announced plans to engage with relevant stakeholders within the Nigerian government following the UKโs release of a new White Paper detailing major immigration reforms.
The policy paper, published on Monday by the UK government, outlines significant changes to the country’s immigration system. Key proposals include the discontinuation of the social care visa route, a lengthened settlement timeline for migrants, a reduction in the validity period of the graduate visa, and the introduction of mandatory English language requirements for dependants.
Although no specific implementation timeline has been provided, the British High Commission has sought to reassure Nigerians, emphasizing the enduring strength of bilateral ties.
โThe UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people connections with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK remains a top destination for Nigerians to work, study, visit, and settle and we value the contributions this brings to the UK,โ a spokesperson said.
According to the Commission, the reforms are aimed at โrestoring order, control, and fairnessโ to the immigration system, managing net migration, and supporting economic growth.
Officials also stressed that the changes will be rolled out gradually, with a commitment to maintaining open dialogue and collaboration with Nigerian authorities.
The announcement comes amid reports that the UK may consider restricting visa access from countries with high rates of overstaying Nigeria is reportedly among the nations being reviewed.

Nevertheless, the British High Commission reiterated the strength of UK-Nigeria relations, describing the United Kingdom as a forward-looking nation that continues to welcome diversity and international talent.
