Nigeria’s Super Falcons will aim to secure an early ticket to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 when they take on Botswana on Thursday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
The nine-time African champions opened their Group B campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win over Tunisia on Monday, courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo. A second consecutive victory would guarantee Nigeria a place in the last eight as they chase a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Injury-Free and Focused
Coach Justin Madugu confirmed the Super Falcons have no injury concerns heading into the match, and the team remains focused on their goal.
“We’re taking the tournament one game at a time,” Madugu said. “We’re confident about our chances against Botswana, but we’re not underestimating any opponent.”

Nigeria vs Botswana: A Familiar Fixture
This will be only the second WAFCON meeting between Nigeria and Botswana. The first encounter was in 2022, where Nigeria won 2-0 with goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe. Botswana had just 26% possession in that match but still managed to reach the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams.
Botswana come into this fixture under pressure, having lost 1-0 to Algeria in their opening game. A defeat against Nigeria would significantly dent their hopes of progressing.
Botswana Remain Defiant
Despite the odds, Botswana’s coach Alex Malete remains optimistic.

“We respect Nigeria’s pedigree, but we believe in our team,” said the 35-year-old. “If we stick to our game plan and play with heart, we can make it a competitive match.”
