World Autism Day was marked globally on 2 April 2026, with renewed calls for inclusion and support for individuals living with autism spectrum conditions.
In Nigeria, Omega Power Ministries (OPM) commemorated the day with a series of activities focused on children enrolled in its free school for autism and Down syndrome.
The church’s general overseer, HRM Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, hosted pupils and supporters at the event, which was also attended by his newly married ward Aboy Chibuzor and his wife.
As part of the celebration, each child received an iPad intended to enhance digital learning and improve access to educational resources. According to organisers, the devices are expected to support communication, literacy and interactive learning for children with developmental challenges.
Additional support came from an overseas partner, who donated cartons of audio learning materials titled Phonics for All. The resources were delivered through OPM’s distribution network and are expected to further aid foundational literacy development among the pupils.
In a separate development during the event, the cleric announced the renaming of Aboy to Elijah Chibuzor, describing it as a symbolic step in his personal journey.
Questions surrounding Elijah’s exact age remain unclear, as no formal records were available at the time he was taken in. The cleric noted that the absence of documentation made it difficult to determine personal details, including age and background.
The event also featured a presentation by other children in the programme, who offered gifts to a former schoolmate in celebration of his recent marriage, reflecting a sense of community among the pupils.
OPM stated that all activities and provisions for the school are funded through tithes and offerings, underscoring what it described as a commitment to social welfare and inclusive education.
World Autism Day, observed annually, aims to promote understanding, acceptance and support for people living with autism worldwide.
