Victor Boniface

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has shed light on the club’s decision to send Nigerian striker Victor Boniface to Werder Bremen on a season-long loan, revealing that the move was driven entirely by the need to restore the forward to his best physical condition following a troubled injury-riddled period.

Boniface, who was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title-winning campaign, saw his form and availability severely hampered during the 2024/25 season due to persistent injuries. The loan switch to Bremen last summer was designed to provide him with the consistent game time and structured training environment needed to rebuild his fitness.

Rolfes explained the thinking behind the arrangement, saying the club sat down with Boniface and concluded that a high-tempo rotation schedule was counterproductive to his recovery. “He was key in the championship season. He was unbelievable in his performance and second season, he had a little bit of problem with injuries and also last summer,” Rolfes told Oma Sports.

“We spoke together. We said he needs more training to get in his best shape again. And if you’re playing every three days it’s difficult because the reality is that you’re not training anymore with a team,” he added.

However, Boniface’s time at Bremen has not been without further setbacks. Rolfes confirmed that the striker encountered additional knee problems during his loan spell, requiring surgery. The Leverkusen chief said the procedure was successful and that the Nigerian international is now on the road to rebuilding his fitness.

“It turned out he had some problems with his knee unfortunately, needed surgery which went really well, and now he’s on his way to get his fitness. His knee is much better. It’s a good situation, and now he has to build up his fitness again,” Rolfes said.

The update will be of keen interest to Super Eagles fans and Leverkusen supporters alike, as Boniface’s return to full fitness remains a priority both for his club and the Nigerian national team setup. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, a fully fit Boniface could be pivotal to Nigeria’s continental and global ambitions.
