Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has urged young people to enlist in the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, warning that negative public perceptions of uniformed services could discourage recruitment.
Soludo made the call on Friday during a memorial service for retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State.
The governor said the distinguished military career of the late general demonstrated how dedicated service could contribute to national security, international peace and Nigeria’s reputation.

He expressed concern that unfavourable perceptions of the military, police and other security agencies could prevent young Nigerians from considering careers in the services.
Soludo stressed the need to promote credible role models whose achievements and commitment to national service could inspire younger generations.
He also urged community leaders and elders to mentor young people and maintain strong connections with their communities, noting that responsible leadership could encourage patriotism and public service.
According to the governor, a person’s achievements should not be measured solely by international recognition but also by the positive impact they make in their community.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Tariweriye Gagariga conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to Obiakor’s distinguished service in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Earlier, the deceased’s son, Nonso Obiakor, described his father as a disciplined officer whose life was defined by international peacekeeping and commitment to humanity.

Obiakor, born in 1951, died on May 27, 2026. He was remembered for his contributions to military service, peacebuilding and his community in Awka.
Soludo, on behalf of the Anambra State Government and its people, extended condolences to the family, the Nigerian Armed Forces and others mourning the retired general.
