Lionel Messi signed off from international football in style, scoring one goal and providing two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night.
The October 6 encounter marked what was described as Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, bringing an end to a 21-year international career with the world champions.
Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr was in charge of the Benin side for the farewell fixture.
Messi was directly involved in all three of Argentina’s goals, according to a report published by his Major League Soccer club, Inter Miami.
The Argentine captain set up defender Nicolás Otamendi for the opening goal from a corner in the 48th minute.
Messi then provided another assist for Nico Paz, who doubled Argentina’s advantage in the 61st minute.
The 39-year-old forward completed his remarkable performance 10 minutes later when he converted a penalty to make it 3-0.
Inter Miami said Messi was “directly involved in each of Argentina’s goals” as the world champions secured victory in Buenos Aires.
The appearance capped a remarkable international journey for Messi, who represented Argentina for more than two decades and helped the country win major international honours during his career.
