19 Years After, Emeka Atuma’s Legacies Still Speak

Nineteen years after leaving the House of Representatives, former federal lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma, popularly known as Kabila, is being presented by his supporters as a politician whose record of legislative and constituency interventions continues to resonate in Abia.

Atuma represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007. He also served as Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Ecological Management.

For his supporters, the significance of his four-year tenure lies not merely in the position he occupied but in the projects and legislative initiatives they say he left behind.

Among the records associated with his tenure are his involvement in environmental legislation, including the establishment of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency.

Beyond legislation, supporters attribute several constituency interventions to his tenure, including water projects, erosion-control initiatives, rural electrification, roads, street-lighting projects, classroom blocks, scholarships and empowerment programmes.

One of the most frequently cited aspects of Atuma’s constituency record is his empowerment programme, which supporters say included the distribution of motorcycles, sewing machines and vehicles, alongside financial assistance to beneficiaries.

The former lawmaker has continued to reference his previous experience as part of his argument for seeking another opportunity to represent the people, this time in the Senate.

In recent campaign engagements, Atuma has emphasised human development, employment, economic empowerment, infrastructure and people-centred legislation as priorities for Abia Central.

His supporters argue that his experience in the House of Representatives gives him an understanding of legislative processes and constituency representation that could be deployed at the Senate.

The 2027 contest will therefore provide voters across Abia Central with an opportunity to assess the candidates against their records, programmes, experience and understanding of the responsibilities of the Senate.

Atuma emerged as the All Progressives Congress candidate for Abia Central after the party’s 2026 senatorial primary, where he defeated Nkechi Nworgu and Samuel Onuigbo.

For his supporters in Ihie-Ukwu Ohuhu and other communities across the district, however, the campaign is being framed around one central argument: that Atuma’s previous record should be considered alongside his plans for the future.

Nineteen years after his exit from the Green Chamber, they believe his legacy remains part of the conversation.

And as the 2027 Senate race gathers momentum, the message from his camp is straightforward: experience, legislative capacity and a record of service should matter.
