All 21 local government area chairmen and 226 councillors in Adamawa State have reportedly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The mass defection was announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, amid political realignments following Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s move to the APC.

The development was confirmed by the Adamawa State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Victor Dogo, who said the local government chairmen, area development administrators and councillors had joined the ruling party.

According to Dogo, the elected officials decided to align with Fintiri, whom he described as their political leader.

He said the defectors believed joining the governor on the same political platform would strengthen their political relationship and enable them to work more closely with his administration.

Several of the council chairmen reportedly communicated their resignation from the PDP in letters addressed to their respective ward chairmen.

The chairmen cited personal reasons and consultations with their families and political associates as factors behind their decisions.

Among them was the Chairman of Demsa Local Government Area, Akham Jalo, who said his decision followed consultations with his family, political associates, stakeholders and residents of the council.

Jalo explained that his move was informed by the desire to align with Fintiri’s political vision and attract more democratic dividends to his local government.

He also expressed appreciation to the PDP leadership and members for the opportunity to serve under the party, while urging his supporters to remain calm and united.

The mass movement represents a significant development in Adamawa’s political landscape, particularly at the grassroots level, where local government chairmen and councillors play important roles in party organisation and mobilisation.

However, the extent to which the defections will affect the PDP’s grassroots structures and future political contests in the state remains to be seen.
