Publisher and politician Dele Momodu has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could lose power in the 2027 presidential election if the opposition fields a united ticket involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a prominent southern politician such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi.

Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the statement during an appearance on a political programme on Channels Television.

According to him, a coalition ticket that combines Atiku with a strong southern figure could significantly weaken the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general elections.

“I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person from the South, Tinubu will be gone,” Momodu said during the interview.

The media entrepreneur argued that Atiku’s long-standing political ambition and experience could make him a formidable candidate if he emerges as the opposition flag bearer in the next election cycle.

Momodu further suggested that political dynamics in Nigeria could favour a coalition of opposition forces, particularly if major political figures unite to challenge the ruling party.

The comments come amid increasing discussions among opposition figures about forming alliances ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general election, which will determine Nigeria’s next president and federal lawmakers.

President Tinubu, who won the 2023 presidential election under the APC platform, is widely expected to seek re-election in 2027.

Momodu’s remarks have already sparked debate among political analysts and supporters of the major political parties, with some arguing that only a strong coalition can effectively challenge the ruling party, while others believe the opposition still faces internal divisions that could weaken its chances.

As political manoeuvring continues, discussions around alliances, coalition tickets, and regional balance are expected to intensify as Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 electoral season.
