The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has extended the deadline for filing annual tax returns to April 30, providing a one-month grace period for taxpayers in Abuja.

The extension follows the expiration of the statutory March 31 deadline, which applies to all taxable individuals, including employees, business owners, and self-employed persons.

In a statement, the agency said the move is aimed at easing compliance and accommodating taxpayers who were unable to meet the original deadline.

Under Nigerian tax regulations, individuals are required to declare income from all sources for the preceding year, regardless of whether taxes were already deducted through the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system.

Authorities have consistently warned that failure to file returns attracts penalties, including fines and other enforcement measures, reinforcing the importance of timely compliance.

The FCT-IRS urged residents to take advantage of the extension window to complete their filings via its online portal or designated offices, stressing that voluntary compliance remains key to funding public infrastructure and services.

The latest extension aligns with broader efforts by tax authorities to improve compliance rates and streamline filing processes across Nigeria’s evolving tax system.
