World football governing body FIFA has sanctioned both Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the DR Congo Football Federation following breaches of match security and fan conduct during a recent international fixture.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary ruling, Nigeria was penalised after spectators were found guilty of throwing objects onto the pitch during the match. The act violated Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which relates to maintaining order and security during football matches.
As a result, the Nigerian football body was fined 1,000 Swiss francs, with FIFA warning that host associations are responsible for ensuring the behaviour of their supporters during official fixtures.
The Congolese federation, however, received a heavier sanction after supporters were reported to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the encounter. The action contravenes Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which prohibits the use of devices that can distract players or interfere with match officials.
Following the investigation, FIFA imposed a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on the DR Congo football authority.
The disciplinary action comes in the aftermath of the match between Nigeria’s Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, and DR Congo national football team.
Adding further controversy to the encounter, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle accused officials from the Congolese team of resorting to voodoo practices following the defeat. The allegation has sparked debate among fans and commentators, though no official evidence has been presented to support the claim.
FIFA has not commented on the voodoo accusation, focusing instead on disciplinary issues related to fan behaviour and match security.
The incident highlights the continued challenges football authorities face in maintaining order at international matches, particularly in high-tension encounters where crowd behaviour can significantly influence the atmosphere and safety of the game.
