A violent attack unfolded in the Detroit suburb of Temple Israel after a gunman rammed a vehicle into the Jewish synagogue before opening fire, triggering panic and a massive law-enforcement response.

Authorities said the attacker drove his truck into the building located in West Bloomfield Township, near Detroit, before exchanging gunfire with armed security personnel stationed at the facility. Security guards responded immediately and fatally shot the suspect, preventing what officials say could have been a far deadlier incident.

Investigators later identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon. Officials say he rammed his vehicle into the synagogue’s entrance while carrying a weapon before the vehicle caught fire inside the building.

During the chaos, one security guard was struck by the vehicle and injured, while dozens of first responders were later treated for smoke inhalation caused by the fire. Despite the dramatic scene, all children and staff inside the synagogue’s early childhood center were safely evacuated.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has since taken over the investigation, describing the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” Authorities say the exact motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

The synagogue, one of the largest Reform congregations in the United States, serves thousands of members and hosts educational programs for young children. Officials said prior active-shooter training and the quick response of security personnel likely prevented a major tragedy.

The attack has sparked renewed concerns about violence against religious institutions across the United States, particularly as incidents targeting Jewish communities have risen in recent years. Security around synagogues and other places of worship has been heightened nationwide following the incident.
