Traditional authorities and community leaders in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State according to a report by Drum Africa has declared the agitation for Biafra “abominable,” announcing a ban on the display of the Biafran flag and pictures of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu within the community.
The decision was announced after a high-level meeting of community stakeholders, including traditional rulers, elders, and local leaders, who said the measure was necessary to restore peace and stability in the area following years of violence and insecurity.
According to community leaders, the ban is part of broader efforts to distance Orsu from activities linked to separatist groups operating in parts of the South-East.

The agitation for the restoration of the Republic of Biafra has been championed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist movement founded in 2012 that advocates for the independence of Nigeria’s South-East region. Nnamdi Kanu, the group’s leader, has been at the center of the movement and remains one of its most prominent figures.
Community leaders in Orsu said the continued display of Biafran symbols has contributed to tension in the area and could attract security crackdowns or violence linked to armed groups operating in the region.
Parts of Imo State and other South-East states have experienced heightened insecurity in recent years amid clashes between Nigerian security forces and armed separatist groups. Analysts note that the conflict escalated in 2021 following military operations against the paramilitary wing of IPOB, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), leading to a prolonged cycle of violence in the region.

Local leaders in Orsu said the new directive is aimed at protecting residents and preventing the community from being dragged into further conflict.
Under the new rules, residents have been warned against flying the Biafran flag, displaying pro-Biafra symbols, or publicly promoting separatist messages associated with the movement.
Community authorities also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and support efforts aimed at restoring peace and economic activity in the area.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions among residents and observers across the South-East, where opinions on the Biafra movement remain sharply divided.
For now, however, the message from Orsu’s traditional authorities is clear: the community wants to distance itself from separatist agitation and focus on stability after years of unrest.
