The Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, David Chukwudifu, has warned that internal divisions within the party could undermine Peter Obi’s political prospects in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
Chukwudifu said the party risked losing ground in Anambra if its existing state, local government and ward executives continued to feel sidelined by Obi and his associates.
In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the NDC chairman alleged that the former Labour Party presidential candidate had failed to engage with the party’s established leadership since joining the organisation in May 2026.
According to Chukwudifu, repeated attempts by him and members of his state working committee to contact Obi had been unsuccessful.
He also alleged that a separate group of politicians had taken control of party activities in the state, including the sale of nomination forms, screening of aspirants and conduct of a primary election, without adequately involving the existing party structure.
“We cannot win any ward in Anambra State, let alone a local government or the state, for Peter Obi if we continue in this direction,” Chukwudifu said.
The chairman further claimed that the dispute had weakened the party’s grassroots organisation, warning that the situation could affect its preparations for the 2027 elections.
He also questioned the reported removal of hundreds of ward and local government executives, arguing that excluding party members could damage its chances of building a broad support base.
Chukwudifu acknowledged that the NDC would face a significant challenge in Anambra, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance has maintained a strong political presence for years.
He urged the party’s leadership to address the disagreements, stressing that political success depended on inclusion and effective grassroots mobilisation.
The allegations come as opposition parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election, with internal party disputes emerging as a potential challenge to their organisational efforts.
Obi’s position on the allegations should be sought before publication to provide a fuller account of the dispute.
