U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Iran’s national football team should reconsider participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing concerns about the players’ safety amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
Trump made the statement in a post on his social media platform, saying that although the Iranian team would be welcomed to the tournament, it may not be “appropriate” for them to attend due to potential threats to their “life and safety.”
The upcoming World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with several matches scheduled to be played in American cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle.
Trump’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following ongoing military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict has already raised concerns about security and political repercussions that could affect international sporting events.
Earlier, Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, said the country might not participate in the tournament under the current circumstances. The minister cited the deteriorating relationship between Iran and the United States and argued that conditions were not safe enough for Iranian athletes to compete in the competition.
Iran had already qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament and was drawn in a group alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with all their group-stage matches scheduled to take place in the United States.
Despite the controversy, officials from FIFA have emphasized that the World Cup is a global sporting event meant to unite nations, insisting that all qualified teams remain eligible to participate. However, uncertainty continues to surround Iran’s final decision, leaving the fate of its national team at the tournament unclear.
The situation underscores how global politics increasingly intersect with international sports, as diplomatic tensions threaten to overshadow one of the world’s biggest football competitions.
