Abia Police Raid Kidnapper’s Hideout, Recover Weapons and Charms

The Abia State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in its investigation into the March 4, 2025, kidnapping of the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas along Azumiri Road in Ukwa East Local Government Area, Abia State. The incident, which also claimed the lives of ASP Tanko Naptip of the Rivers State Counter-Terrorism Unit, Anayo Ukwu, and the Managing Director of DozzMan Filling Station, Mr. Chidozie Confidence Chijioke, had sparked intense security concerns in the region.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives traced the hideout of the suspected kidnappers to Ikot Ukpon Village in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. On Thursday, August 21, at about 8:30 p.m., officers raided the camp, arresting six suspects and recovering two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of live ammunition, one locally made pistol, six magazines, and a large bag containing items believed to be charms and other spiritual materials.

However, as the operatives were leaving the hideout, other members of the gang ambushed them in an attempt to free their arrested accomplices. A fierce gun battle ensued, during which the six arrested suspects sustained gunshot wounds while trying to escape and later died on the way to the hospital. Several other gang members fled with bullet wounds. Two police officers were also injured and are currently receiving treatment.

Police Commissioner Danladi Isa reaffirmed the Command’s determination to ensure that “there will be no hiding place for criminals” in Abia State. He said the police would continue collaborating with the Akwa Ibom State Command to track down the fleeing suspects.

The CP further appealed to members of the public to be vigilant and report anyone with bullet injuries or suspicious behavior to the nearest police station. The Command also released its emergency hotlines: 08035415405, 08079210003, 08079210004, and 08079210005.
