NDLEA Sensitizes Geometric Power Workers on Drug Abuse Dangers, Workplace Safety

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abia State Command, on Tuesday, April 22, 2026, carried out an anti-drug sensitization programme at Geometric Power Limited, located in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State targeting one of Nigeria’s most strategically significant power infrastructure facilities in the South East.

The exercise was led by Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Frank Nwaohamuo, who served as resource person for the engagement and delivered a presentation to staff on the health, workplace, and legal consequences of drug abuse.

Nwaohamuo zeroed in on the specific dangers posed by substance abuse in technical and high-risk work environments such as power generation and distribution, warning that impaired judgment and reduced efficiency among workers in such settings could trigger catastrophic accidents with consequences far beyond the individual.

“A drug-free workforce is essential for safety, optimal performance, and national development,” he told the gathering, urging workers to not only personally abstain from illicit substances but to become active community advocates against drug abuse.

The NDLEA team also briefed participants on the legal framework governing drug-related offences in Nigeria, reminding them of the agency’s enforcement powers and the serious penalties attached to the possession and use of controlled substances.

Staff of Geometric Power, which supplies electricity to Aba and its industrial ecosystem, one of the most commercially active manufacturing hubs in West Africa, reportedly received the session warmly, with several workers acknowledging that the programme sharpened their awareness of the risks and reinforced their personal commitment to a safe, drug-free workplace.

The sensitization is part of a broader NDLEA strategy of taking anti-drug campaigns directly into workplaces, schools, and communities, rather than relying solely on enforcement and prosecution as deterrents.

Abia State has in recent years recorded rising cases of drug abuse, particularly among youth in Aba and Umuahia, making community and institutional engagement exercises such as Tuesday’s programme increasingly urgent.
