Chief Timipre Sylva

The Federal Government has arraigned six individuals, including senior military officers and a serving police inspector, over an alleged plot to overthrow the Nigerian government, with former minister Timipre Sylva also named in the case.

The defendants were brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja on multiple charges, including conspiracy, treason, terrorism, and money laundering. Prosecutors allege that the accused conspired in 2025 to “levy war against the state” and destabilise the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Those facing trial include retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, and three others. Sylva, however, is said to be at large but remains listed in the charge sheet.

The charges, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, span 13 counts bordering on terrorism financing, failure to disclose security intelligence, and alleged attempts to aid acts of terrorism.

The arraignment marks a significant development in ongoing investigations into an alleged coup plot that has drawn national attention and led to multiple arrests within military and security circles.

Meanwhile, the wives of detained officers linked to the case have renewed calls for justice, expressing concern over the prolonged detention of their spouses without clear communication or timely trial.

Some of the women described months of uncertainty, claiming their husbands were arrested without prior notice and held incommunicado, leaving families in distress and without official updates.

They have appealed to the authorities to ensure due process, urging that those accused be given a fair hearing rather than being held indefinitely without resolution.

The case comes amid heightened sensitivity over national security, as authorities continue to investigate alleged attempts to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.
