President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Saidu Mohammed, in a move described as being in the public interest.
The presidency simultaneously nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as his replacement, with the appointment subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory effectiveness in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sector.
According to the presidency, the move is backed by provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, which governs the administration and oversight of the oil and gas industry.
Pending Senate confirmation of the new nominee, the most senior official within the authority is expected to oversee operations in an acting capacity.
Umar, the nominee, is described as a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience spanning the energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, with a track record in strategic leadership and operational transformation.
The presidency said the leadership change is part of broader efforts to reposition key regulatory institutions, enhance transparency and boost efficiency in Nigeria’s critical energy sector.
