Crates of eggs

A magistrates’ court in Kaduna has sentenced a 27-year-old farm manager, Israel Tony, to eight months in prison for stealing 30 crates of eggs from his employer.

The presiding magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, handed down the sentence without an option of fine and also ordered the convict to pay ₦243,000 as compensation to the complainant.

According to the prosecution, the offence occurred between February and April at a poultry farm located in Maraba Rido area of Kaduna State. The case was reported to the Sabon Tasha Police Station after the farm owner noticed irregularities in the farm’s account records.

Prosecutor Chidi Leo told the court that the defendant, who was employed as the farm manager, stole the eggs and later confessed to the crime after his arrest. He admitted selling the stolen items to an accomplice identified as Bello Aminu, who remains at large.

The conviction highlights ongoing concerns about internal theft in agricultural businesses, particularly in poultry operations where inventory monitoring remains a major challenge.
