President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the governorship ambition of Obafemi Hamzat ahead of the 2027 elections, signaling a major consolidation within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The endorsement was announced following a meeting between the president and members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Hamzat emerged as the party’s consensus candidate during the engagement.
The development comes shortly after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly backed Hamzat as his preferred successor, describing him as capable and well-prepared to lead the state.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted Hamzat’s experience and close working relationship with the current administration, noting that his familiarity with governance structures positions him for continuity in leadership.
Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, is widely seen within APC circles as a key technocrat with deep knowledge of Lagos governance and policy implementation.
Tinubu’s endorsement is expected to significantly influence political alignments within the party, effectively positioning Hamzat as the frontrunner in the race for Lagos governorship ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move underscores the APC’s strategy of continuity in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, as preparations gradually intensify toward the next election cycle.
