BENDE 2027: Why Ben Kalu’s Re-Election Matters to Bende, Abia and the South-East

Nigeria’s political history offers a compelling lesson: political influence becomes meaningful when it is deployed in pursuit of collective interests.

From the South-West’s strategic political calculations during Olusegun Obasanjo’s re-election in 2003 to the coalition-building that propelled Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015, one enduring principle stands out: political organisation, strategic alliances and continuity can strengthen a region’s bargaining power.

As Bende approaches the 2027 elections, it must confront a fundamental question: what is the broader value of its representation at the national level, and how can that influence be consolidated for the benefit of our people?

For me, the answer is clear. The re-election of Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu is not merely a question of personal ambition or party loyalty. It is a strategic decision with implications for Bende, Abia State and the entire South-East.

As Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kalu occupies a position of considerable national influence. His responsibilities and political engagements extend beyond Bende Federal Constituency, providing an important platform for advancing issues that affect Ndi Igbo.

The question, therefore, is not simply whether Bende should support its son. It is whether the constituency understands the opportunities that come with having one of its own at the centre of national legislative leadership.

SEDC: A Strategic Investment in the South-East

One of the most consequential legislative developments for the region is the establishment of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), an institutional framework designed to coordinate development interventions across the five South-East states.

The Commission represents an important opportunity to address the region’s longstanding developmental challenges through structured planning, reconstruction and investment.

For a region that has consistently raised concerns about infrastructure deficits, economic exclusion and inadequate federal attention, the establishment of the SEDC is a significant development.

Kalu’s role in advancing the Commission underscores the importance of having influential representation capable of contributing to regional legislative priorities.

Its success will ultimately depend on effective implementation, adequate funding and sustained political commitment. Nevertheless, the institutional foundation it provides is a development worth acknowledging.

PISE-P: Addressing Insecurity Beyond Military Force

Kalu’s Peace in the South-East Project (PISE-P) also reflects the need for a broader approach to the region’s security challenges.

Insecurity cannot be addressed exclusively through force. Dialogue, reconciliation, community engagement and peacebuilding must complement conventional security measures.

PISE-P promotes a non-kinetic approach that seeks to address the underlying tensions contributing to insecurity, while supporting communities and individuals affected by violence.

The initiative’s Peace Fund Committee further provides a framework for mobilising assistance for victims.

These interventions deserve attention because sustainable peace is indispensable to economic recovery, investment and the restoration of public confidence across the South-East.

Security Summit: The Case for Regional Cooperation

Kalu’s involvement in the South-East Security Summit further demonstrates the importance of coordinated regional action.

At the summit, he called for a 60-day roadmap to address the region’s security challenges, underscoring the need for practical measures, intergovernmental cooperation and clearly defined priorities.

Security remains a shared responsibility that requires collaboration among federal and state governments, security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders.

The significance of such engagement lies in its recognition that the challenges confronting the South-East cannot be effectively addressed through isolated efforts.

A coordinated regional response is essential, and influential representation can help sustain the conversations and institutional cooperation required to achieve it.

Federal Institutions: An Investment in Abia’s Future

For decades, Abia State has faced a significant deficit in federal educational institutions and related infrastructure.

The attraction of the Federal College of Education, Bende, and the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item, represents an important opportunity to expand access to education and strengthen the state’s human capital base.

These institutions are more than political talking points. They have the potential to create employment, stimulate economic activities, improve educational opportunities and support the development of a skilled workforce.

Their long-term value will depend on adequate funding, infrastructure, staffing and effective administration. However, the opportunity they represent is substantial.

For Bende and Abia, the strategic importance of federal institutions cannot be overstated. They create a foundation upon which future generations can build.

We Cannot Complain About Marginalisation and Undermine Our Own

This is where the conversation must move beyond party politics and personal disagreements.

It is unfortunate that some of our political conversations are increasingly dominated by the impulse to pull down our own whenever they rise to positions of national influence.

Disagreement is an essential part of democracy. Public officials must be scrutinised, their performance questioned and their shortcomings exposed. But criticism must not become a destructive exercise in which political rivalry takes precedence over collective progress.

We cannot continue to lament the marginalisation of the South-East while engaging in divisive politics that weakens our bargaining power and undermines the very progress we demand.

Other regions have demonstrated the importance of political organisation, strategic alliances and purposeful engagement. Their experiences are not without contradictions, but they offer an important lesson: development requires more than complaints. It requires influence, cooperation and sustained advocacy.

And that is where Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu comes into the picture.

Continuity Must Deliver More

I support Ben Kalu’s re-election because I believe continuity in his representation can create further opportunities for Bende, Abia and the South-East.

He has demonstrated leadership in several important areas, and his achievements deserve recognition. But recognition must not be confused with blind loyalty.

Our support should be a conscious decision to consolidate the gains already made while demanding even greater dividends of representation.

Re-election should come with higher expectations: more development projects, stronger legislative advocacy, improved access to federal opportunities and greater attention to the needs of ordinary constituents.

The responsibility of a representative does not end with securing a position of influence. That influence must translate into tangible benefits for the people.

Bende must therefore support continuity while insisting on accountability, measurable results and a clear commitment to the constituency’s development.

Bende Must Think Beyond Bende

The 2027 election presents Bende with an opportunity to make a decision that reflects both local aspirations and regional interests.

Our political choices must recognise that the future of Bende is connected to the future of Abia State and the South-East.

This is bigger than party politics. It is bigger than clan, community or personal ambition. It is a collective project for the advancement of our people.

Let us rise above personal differences and political divisions. Let us acknowledge effective representation, consolidate the progress already made and demand even greater opportunities for our people.

Let us support continuity, insist on accountability and ask for more.

Bende must think beyond Bende.

Our future is connected to the future of Abia and the South-East.
