FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting to rest speculation surrounding the country’s participation amid geopolitical tensions.
Infantino reiterated that Iran has qualified for the tournament and will feature in the competition scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to the FIFA chief, Iran’s presence at the global football showpiece is not in doubt, as the team earned its place on sporting merit and represents its people on the world stage.
He emphasized that football should remain separate from politics, stressing FIFA’s position of promoting unity through sport despite ongoing international tensions affecting the region.
Infantino also expressed optimism that the situation involving Iran and other geopolitical issues would improve before the tournament begins in June 2026, allowing all qualified teams to participate without disruption.
The confirmation comes after months of uncertainty triggered by regional conflicts and conflicting statements from political and sporting authorities, which had raised questions about Iran’s eligibility and safety concerns regarding matches scheduled in the United States.
Despite those concerns, FIFA maintains that the 2026 World Cup will proceed as planned with Iran included among the participating nations, reinforcing the tournament’s expanded 48-team format and global inclusiveness.
