The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, dismissing reports that the project has been abandoned or scaled down.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave the assurance on Monday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Umahi said construction, surveying and design activities were ongoing along different sections of the coastal highway, adding that work was progressing faster than anticipated in some areas.
According to the minister, the first section, covering 47.47 kilometres in Lagos State, has been constructed, while work on the 55-kilometre second section is expected to reach completion by mid-November 2026.
He explained that surveyors and designers were also working along the Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers sections in preparation for further construction.
Umahi disclosed that the Ministry of Works had sought Tinubu’s approval to incorporate about 400 kilometres of the existing East-West Road, stretching from Edo through the Niger Delta to Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, into the wider coastal highway development.
He said the proposed integration was intended to address persistent structural and flooding problems affecting parts of the East-West Road, including sections reportedly constructed below flood levels.
The minister also reported that construction on Sections 3A and 3B along the Akwa Ibom and Cross River axis had exceeded 40 per cent completion.
Work was also progressing on Sections 4A and 4B, covering approximately 65 kilometres across Ogun and Ondo states, while the section at the Calabar end was advancing under the administration’s plan to develop the highway from both ends.
Umahi added that Section Five, covering about 62.5 kilometres in Akwa Ibom State, had recorded more than 20 per cent completion despite construction starting less than three months earlier.
He maintained that the proposed integration of existing roads would not amount to abandoning or reducing the scope of the original coastal highway.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s major infrastructure projects, intended to improve connectivity across Nigeria’s coastal states and support the movement of people and goods.
The project has attracted public debate over its cost, route alignment, implementation and potential economic impact.
