The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has ordered the immediate controlled demolition of a four-storey residential building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after structural engineers declared it unsafe due to severe foundation defects that pose an imminent risk of collapse.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Director General of GADA, Arc. Uche Ukeje, said officials from the authority’s Building Control Unit, Engineering Department and Town Planning Department responded promptly after receiving reports of visible cracks in the building.
According to the preliminary structural assessment, engineers discovered extensive cracking around the building’s foundation, indicating that the structural base had been seriously compromised. The building was subsequently declared unsafe and unfit for human habitation.
As a precautionary measure, all occupants of the building have been safely evacuated to eliminate the risk of casualties.
GADA said arrangements have been concluded for a controlled demolition of the structure to ensure public safety while minimising damage to neighbouring buildings and infrastructure.
The authority reassured residents that the situation is under control and urged members of the public to avoid the affected area while demolition and safety operations are ongoing. Residents were also advised to cooperate with emergency personnel and officials at the site.
Meanwhile, GADA has commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure.
The authority further appealed to residents of Aba to promptly report any signs of structural distress in buildings, including visible cracks, leaning walls or foundation defects, to the appropriate authorities for immediate assessment and intervention.
GADA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through strict enforcement of building safety standards across Aba.
