Victor Osimhen’s first-half penalty was enough to hand Galatasaray a famous 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Istanbul, leaving Arne Slot’s side reeling from back-to-back defeats for only the second time under the Dutchman.

It was a disastrous evening for the Reds marked by defensive frailties, squandered chances, and a double injury setback to goalkeeper Alisson Becker and striker Hugo Ekitike while Galatasaray celebrated their first Champions League home win in seven years.

Early Warning Signs

Slot surprised many with his team selection, leaving Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak on the bench, while Jeremie Frimpong started wide on the right. But Liverpool’s backline again looked shaky. Within minutes, Baris Alper Yilmaz raced clear of Dominik Szoboszlai and forced Alisson into a smart stop, a glimpse of the danger to come.

Liverpool almost snatched the opener moments later when Ekitike failed to capitalize on a one-on-one with Ugurcan Cakir, with Cody Gakpo’s follow-up effort cleared off the line by Ismail Jakobs.

Just 23 seconds later, the Reds were punished. Yilmaz, too quick for Szoboszlai again, cut inside and drew a reckless arm across the face. Referee Clement Turpin wasted no time pointing to the spot, and Osimhen kept his composure to fire straight down the middle past Alisson.

Wasted Chances, Mounting Problems

Liverpool tried to respond, with Florian Wirtz testing Cakir and both Milos Kerkez and Ibrahima Konaté missing big chances from set-pieces. Salah and Isak were eventually thrown on, but momentum was broken again when Ekitike pulled up injured and had to be replaced by Alexis Mac Allister.

Konaté thought he had won a penalty late on after going down under Wilfried Singo’s challenge, but VAR showed the Galatasaray defender had clearly won the ball.

Istanbul Blues

Unlike so many times before, there would be no late rescue act. Slot’s Liverpool looked flat, fragile, and short of ideas in attack.

For Galatasaray, it was a night of celebration and vindication a return to winning ways on Europe’s biggest stage, powered by Osimhen’s clinical edge. For Liverpool, however, it was another harsh lesson in a season suddenly beginning to wobble.
