A fresh leadership battle is brewing in the House of Representatives as 61 out of the 81 opposition lawmakers have reportedly endorsed Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere as the next Minority Leader following the defection of former Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The nomination was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and signed by lawmakers drawn from several opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord Party.

Ugochinyere, who currently represents Ideato Federal Constituency and serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), is now widely regarded as the frontrunner for the position based on the numerical strength of lawmakers backing his candidacy.

However, the nomination has sparked debate within opposition ranks, with reports of rival efforts by some lawmakers who are allegedly supporting Hon. Frederick Agbedi, the representative of Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State.

Those opposed to Ugochinyere’s emergence reportedly argue that the minority leadership position should remain in the South-South geopolitical zone since it was vacated by Kingsley Chinda, who hails from Rivers State. Others have also questioned whether the position should go to a member of the Action Peoples Party, one of the smallest parties represented in the House.

Supporters of Ugochinyere, however, maintain that the endorsement of 61 opposition lawmakers reflects the democratic will of the minority caucus and should be respected by the House leadership.

The development has placed significant attention on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who is expected to determine whether the House will officially recognize the nomination submitted by the opposition bloc.

Political observers say the outcome could influence the balance of power within the House and shape the direction of opposition politics in the National Assembly as lawmakers continue to navigate shifting alliances and party realignments.

With competing interests emerging within the opposition camp, all eyes are now on the House leadership for a final decision on who will occupy one of the most influential positions in the lower legislative chamber.
