Former Rivers State Governor and 2027 vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has lamented the sharp increase in electricity costs in Nigeria, claiming that his monthly electricity bill has risen from about N500,000 to N4m.
Amaechi made the disclosure while highlighting the economic hardship confronting Nigerians and arguing that the rising cost of electricity has placed additional pressure on households and businesses.
According to him, the steep increase in electricity charges underscores the need for a review of the current electricity pricing regime and greater government intervention to cushion the impact on consumers.
Amaechi, who is supporting former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential bid, said an Atiku-led administration would restore electricity subsidy as part of measures to reduce the burden of rising energy costs on Nigerians.
He argued that electricity remains a critical component of economic productivity, stressing that unaffordable power could further increase the operating costs of businesses and worsen the hardship faced by households.
The former governor’s comments come amid continuing public concerns over electricity tariffs and the broader cost-of-living crisis, with consumers and businesses increasingly demanding measures to make power more affordable.
Amaechi said the proposed return of subsidy under Atiku would be aimed at providing relief to electricity consumers while addressing the wider economic challenges facing the country.
The electricity subsidy proposal is expected to form part of the broader economic policy debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as political parties and candidates seek to convince Nigerians on how they intend to address inflation, energy costs and declining household purchasing power.
