Traditional rulers in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, have conferred a chieftaincy title on a former lawmaker, Hon. Emeka Atuma, while expressing support for his ambition to represent Abia Central Senatorial District in the 2027 elections.
The traditional institution bestowed the title, “Ihie Ukwu Ohuhu,” on Atuma during the 2026 Iwa Ji Ohuhu celebration.
The conferment, according to the organisers, was in recognition of Atuma’s relationship with the Ohuhu community, his contributions to community development and his commitment to public service.
The event attracted traditional rulers, community leaders and political stakeholders, including a former Nigerian Ambassador to Argentina, Ambassador Empire Kanu; Governor Alex Otti, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Uzor Nwachukwu; the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha; and the Mayor of Umuahia North LGA, Chief Smart Ihuoma.
The gathering also provided an opportunity for community stakeholders to express their views on the 2027 political contest in Abia Central.
Those backing Atuma described him as an experienced and accessible politician capable of providing effective representation for the senatorial district.
The endorsement, according to the organisers, reflected confidence in Atuma’s leadership record and his ability to attract development while articulating the interests of constituents at the National Assembly.
The development comes as political activities intensify across Abia Central ahead of the 2027 general elections, with aspirants and political stakeholders already positioning themselves for the contest.

The organisers said the traditional recognition should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial honour, but as an indication of the relationship between community leadership, traditional institutions and the aspirations of the people.
They further argued that the 2027 contest should focus on productive and result-oriented representation capable of advancing the interests of Abia Central at the national level.
Atuma is among the politicians whose names have featured prominently in discussions surrounding the 2027 Abia Central Senate race.
