Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will on September 10 launch the National Community Food Bank Programme in Anambra State as part of efforts to tackle food insecurity and improve nutrition among vulnerable residents.
The initiative will prioritise children aged zero to six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers identified as requiring nutritional support.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, disclosed this during a preparatory meeting for the programme, according to information released by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Stanley Nwako.
Obidike said prospective beneficiaries would be identified and assessed through primary healthcare centres and other health facilities closest to their communities.
He explained that the assessment would enable health officials to determine the nutritional needs and eligibility of prospective beneficiaries, as well as provide reliable data for effective planning and distribution of food supplies.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of proper management and transparent distribution of the food items to ensure that the intervention reaches those most in need.
The Anambra rollout is part of the nationwide Community Food Bank initiative launched by the First Lady in April 2026. The programme initially targets 500,000 households in its first year and is being implemented in collaboration with relevant government agencies and development partners.
The initiative is designed to strengthen community-based nutrition support, particularly for vulnerable children and families affected by food insecurity.
The First Lady is also expected to visit Anambra on September 10 for other activities, including the empowerment of 5,000 people under the Progressives United Against Poverty Programme and a visit to the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, where selected projects are expected to be commissioned.
The Anambra launch comes as concerns over food affordability, household vulnerability and child malnutrition continue to drive government and community-based interventions across the country.
