Tunisia has appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as its new head coach after dismissing Sabri Lamouchi following the team’s disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation moved swiftly after Tunisia suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in its opening Group F match, making Lamouchi the first coaching casualty of the tournament. The former Ivory Coast international had only taken charge of the national team in January 2026 but managed just one victory in five matches.

Renard arrives with a wealth of international experience and an impressive track record in African football. The 57-year-old is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most successful coaches, having won the Africa Cup of Nations with both Zambia and Ivory Coast.

The French tactician also gained global recognition after guiding Saudi Arabia to a shock victory over Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He has additionally managed Morocco, the French women’s national team, and Saudi Arabia during two separate spells.

Tunisia’s football authorities hope Renard’s appointment will revive the Carthage Eagles’ World Cup campaign after their disastrous opening performance against Sweden left them at the bottom of Group F.

Renard is expected to take charge immediately as Tunisia prepares for crucial group-stage encounters against Japan and the Netherlands. With two matches remaining, the North African side still has a chance of advancing to the knockout stage, but it will need a significant improvement in performances and results.

The appointment signals Tunisia’s determination to salvage its World Cup hopes and restore confidence within the squad as the tournament enters a decisive phase.
