Biodun Stephen Says Protecting Actors’ Marriages Is Not Her Responsibility

Award-winning Nollywood filmmaker Biodun Stephen has stated that safeguarding the marriages of actors is not part of her responsibilities as a film producer, insisting that every adult must take responsibility for protecting his or her own relationship.

The respected producer made the remarks while addressing concerns about the growing perception that close interactions between actors during movie productions sometimes contribute to marital challenges and relationship breakdowns.

According to Stephen, acting is a professional career that often requires performers to spend long hours together, rehearse emotional scenes and portray romantic relationships on screen. However, she maintained that these professional obligations should not be confused with personal relationships.

She argued that actors are professionals who understand the boundaries between fiction and reality, adding that they should be trusted to conduct themselves responsibly regardless of the roles they are assigned.

Stephen emphasized that her primary responsibility is to produce quality films by assembling talented actors, supervising production activities and ensuring that projects are completed successfully within schedule and budget.

She explained that producers cannot monitor the private lives of actors or become responsible for the decisions they make outside the workplace.

The filmmaker noted that every married individual has a personal obligation to remain committed to their spouse and uphold the values that sustain their relationship, irrespective of the demands of their profession.

She further stressed that professionalism, discipline and mutual respect remain essential on every movie set, saying successful productions are built on trust and clear boundaries among cast and crew members.

Stephen also cautioned against the tendency to assume that actors who display strong chemistry on screen are romantically involved in real life, noting that convincing performances are part of their profession and should not be mistaken for reality.

She observed that many actors have maintained stable marriages and successful careers simultaneously, proving that professionalism and family life can coexist when individuals remain committed to their responsibilities.

The producer urged the public to avoid placing unnecessary blame on filmmakers whenever celebrity relationships experience difficulties, arguing that personal choices and individual conduct play a far greater role than the nature of the entertainment industry.
