Messi Hits 936 Career Goals as Inter Miami Beat Atlanta United

Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 3-1 in Major League Soccer on Saturday, taking his career goal tally to 936.

The Argentine forward struck twice in the second half to help Miami secure their third consecutive victory at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The brace took Messi’s career tally to 936 goals for club and country, leaving him 64 short of the historic 1,000-goal mark.

Inter Miami opened the scoring shortly before half-time through German forward Germán Berterame, who headed home after a move involving Messi and Luis Suárez.

Messi then took centre stage after the break, scoring in the 56th minute after combining with Berterame before adding his second four minutes later.

For his second goal, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner raced onto a pass from Suárez, evaded a defender and finished past Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.

Atlanta reduced the deficit in the 89th minute through Fafa Picault, who converted a penalty, but Miami held on to claim all three points.

The victory strengthened Inter Miami’s position in the Eastern Conference standings as the regular season approaches its conclusion.

Messi also increased his tally to 25 goals in the 2026 MLS campaign, maintaining his position among the league’s leading scorers.

Beyond his goalscoring exploits, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward continued to demonstrate his creative influence, registering an assist in the match.

The assist also took him to at least 15 assists in three consecutive MLS seasons, making him the first player in league history to achieve the feat.

Messi’s latest performance adds another milestone to a career that has included spells at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami, alongside his achievements with Argentina’s national team.

With Miami maintaining their push towards the MLS playoffs, the Argentine captain will have further opportunities to increase his career tally before the end of the season.
