2027: Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Presidency, Says ‘Four Years and Not a Day More’

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has again declared that he will serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election, insisting that he has no desire to remain in office beyond a single tenure.

Obi made the declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he dismissed claims that his one-term pledge is merely a political strategy designed to attract votes. According to him, his promise is genuine and reflects his conviction that four years are sufficient to place Nigeria on the path of recovery and sustainable development. 

The former Anambra State governor said his objective is not to occupy the presidency for as long as possible but to provide purposeful leadership capable of restoring confidence in government, reviving the economy, improving security, and rebuilding public institutions.

Obi stressed that effective governance is measured by the quality of leadership and the impact made within a given period rather than by the number of years spent in office. He maintained that a focused administration with the right priorities can deliver meaningful reforms within a single four-year tenure. 

Responding to recent comments by his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who disclosed that both leaders had agreed on a single-term arrangement before accepting the joint ticket, Obi confirmed that such an agreement exists.

He described the understanding as one founded on mutual trust and respect, adding that agreements reached by honorable individuals should be respected.

“As gentlemen, we must respect the agreement,” Obi said, reiterating that he does not require more than four years to demonstrate the direction he intends to take Nigeria. 

The NDC presidential candidate further emphasized that his administration, if elected, would prioritize security, economic productivity, job creation, education, healthcare, and institutional reforms. He argued that Nigeria’s current challenges demand decisive leadership rather than prolonged political tenure.

Reaffirming his position in unequivocal terms, Obi declared: “I will serve for four years—full stop. If you want me, it’s four years, full stop—not a day more.” 

His repeated commitment to a single-term presidency has become one of the defining themes of his 2027 campaign. Supporters argue that the pledge demonstrates his commitment to equity, national unity, and the principle of power rotation, while critics continue to question whether such a political agreement can be enforced under Nigeria’s constitutional framework. 

The renewed declaration is expected to remain a major issue in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election, as political parties intensify campaigns and voters assess the promises and commitments of leading candidates.
