Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has strongly rejected the explanation offered by Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala over their heated confrontation following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, accusing the former defender of lying about what transpired.

The controversy stems from the chaotic scenes that erupted after Spain defeated Argentina to lift the World Cup trophy. Tempers flared at the final whistle as players and coaching staff from both sides became involved in a series of confrontations, prompting widespread criticism of the post-match conduct.

Ayala had earlier attempted to explain the incident, claiming his actions were a reaction to comments allegedly made by Olmo during the emotional aftermath of the final. He also expressed regret, insisting he never intended to seriously assault the Spanish midfielder.

However, Olmo has dismissed that version of events, insisting the Argentine coach’s account is false.

“He is lying,” Olmo said while responding to Ayala’s explanation. The Barcelona midfielder maintained that the apology was not sincere and accused the former Argentina international of attempting to justify actions that should never have happened.

Olmo stressed that defeat should be accepted with dignity, adding that football professionals have a responsibility to set the right example for younger generations. He said winning and losing are both part of the game and should never lead to violence or physical confrontations.

The Spain international also expressed pride in the manner his teammates conducted themselves throughout the tournament, saying their unity and discipline played a key role in securing the country’s World Cup triumph. He insisted that nothing which occurred after the final whistle should overshadow Spain’s achievement on the pitch.

The altercation remains one of the biggest talking points following the 2026 World Cup final, with FIFA reportedly reviewing the incidents that occurred after the match as football authorities examine the conduct of those involved.
