Iran has once again shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz, reversing a brief reopening and escalating tensions with the United States over a continuing naval blockade. Iranian military authorities said the waterway one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes has been placed under “strict control” following Washington’s refusal to lift restrictions on Iranian ports and shipping.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Tehran had reopened the strait to commercial vessels amid signs of a fragile ceasefire in the region. However, that decision was quickly reversed after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the blockade would remain in force until a broader agreement is reached.

Iran has accused the United States of “piracy” and warned that no unrestricted passage would be allowed while its vessels remain blocked. Officials also indicated that attempts by ships to navigate the strait could be met with enforcement actions by Iranian forces. Reports indicate that tensions have already spilled into the waterway, with some vessels turning back and others coming under fire near the Gulf region as uncertainty over safe passage grows.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily. Its closure has raised fears of renewed disruption to global markets and a potential spike in fuel prices worldwide. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with international actors pushing for de-escalation and the restoration of free navigation. However, analysts warn that the situation remains volatile, with the risk of broader conflict still looming if negotiations fail.

The latest development underscores the fragile nature of the current ceasefire and highlights how quickly progress can unravel in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive regions.
