D'Tigress

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, could be drawn against global powerhouses such as the United States, Germany and Australia in the group stage of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

The permutations arise ahead of the official draw scheduled for April 21 in Berlin, where 16 qualified teams will be divided into four groups.

D’Tigress have been placed in Pot 2, alongside teams like China, Belgium and Spain, meaning they will avoid those sides but are guaranteed to face at least one top seeded nation from Pot 1.

Tough Opponents Loom

With Pot 1 expected to include elite teams such as the United States and Australia, Nigeria could be drawn into a challenging group featuring one or more of these basketball heavyweights.

Germany, as host nation, is also among the teams D’Tigress could face depending on the final group configuration.

Familiar Battles at the Top Level

Nigeria are no strangers to facing top ranked sides. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, D’Tigress reached the quarterfinals after a historic run but were eventually eliminated by the United States.

They also recorded a notable victory over Australia during the same tournament, highlighting their growing competitiveness on the global stage.

Draw Still to Decide Fate

While the potential matchups underline the scale of the challenge ahead, the exact group opponents will only be confirmed after the official draw.

The tournament, scheduled for September 4 to 13 in Berlin, will feature 16 teams competing for the world title.

For D’Tigress, the draw will be crucial in determining their path as they aim to build on recent successes and further establish themselves among the world’s elite in women’s basketball.
