Favour Ofili to

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has welcomed sprint star Favour Ofili back into its fold after World Athletics rejected her bid to switch allegiance to Turkey. The decision by the global athletics governing body followed a review of her application alongside those of 10 other athletes, all linked to a wider recruitment effort by Turkish authorities.

World Athletics ruled that the proposed transfers were part of a coordinated strategy designed to attract foreign athletes with lucrative contracts, a move it said could undermine the integrity of international competition.

Ofili, who had obtained Turkish citizenship in 2025 and signed a long term contract, argued that her decision was influenced by disputes with Nigerian athletics authorities and concerns about her career management. However, the review panel concluded that her ties to Turkey were insufficient and that approving the switch would violate established eligibility rules guiding nationality transfers in athletics.

The ruling means the 23 year old sprinter remains ineligible to represent Turkey at international competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Following the decision, the AFN expressed readiness to reintegrate the athlete, describing her as a key figure in Nigeria’s sprint prospects.Officials emphasised the need to provide a supportive environment to help her thrive, calling for unity and encouragement from stakeholders across the athletics community.

The National Sports Commission also echoed similar sentiments, welcoming her return and urging renewed backing for one of the country’s brightest track talents.

The case forms part of a broader crackdown by World Athletics on what it views as “flag of convenience” transfers, where athletes switch nationality primarily for financial or competitive advantage.

While Ofili can still train or compete at club level abroad, the decision ensures she remains eligible only for Nigeria in international competitions. The development is expected to boost Nigeria’s sprint ambitions, with authorities hopeful that improved relations and support systems will help maximise her potential on the global stage.
