The Federal Government has commenced the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to doctors across the country as part of efforts to address welfare concerns in the health sector.

The payments are linked to the implementation of the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, with authorities confirming that disbursement has begun.

The move comes amid sustained agitation by members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors over unpaid salaries, allowances and other entitlements.

Officials said the development forms part of broader measures aimed at restoring industrial harmony and improving the welfare of medical personnel, who play a critical role in service delivery across public health institutions.

The arrears being settled include those arising from salary adjustments and other benefits tied to previous agreements between the government and health sector unions.

Analysts say the commencement of payments could ease tensions and help prevent disruptions in healthcare services, although stakeholders insist that consistent implementation of agreements remains key to long term stability in the sector.
