Nigerian Senate

The Senate has, for the second time, rejected a motion seeking an independent investigation into the alleged fake government agency that has dominated public discourse in recent weeks.

The proposal, which sought a fresh Senate inquiry into the controversy, failed to secure the support of lawmakers during plenary, with the upper chamber maintaining that multiple agencies are already investigating the matter.

Lawmakers argued that allowing the Senate to commence a parallel investigation while the case is before the courts and under investigation by relevant law enforcement agencies could amount to duplicating efforts and potentially interfere with ongoing judicial proceedings.

The chamber maintained that the appropriate institutions should be allowed to complete their investigations and legal processes without legislative interference.

The controversy centres on allegations surrounding the activities of a purported government agency said to have operated without legal backing while allegedly presenting itself as an official federal institution.

The matter has attracted widespread public attention, leading to investigations by security agencies and court proceedings involving individuals linked to the organisation.

Some senators, however, insisted that the National Assembly has an oversight responsibility to investigate issues affecting public institutions and governance. They argued that a legislative inquiry could help identify regulatory gaps and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite those arguments, the Senate declined to proceed with the proposed probe, effectively reaffirming its earlier position that ongoing investigations by the appropriate authorities should be allowed to run their full course.

The decision means there will be no separate Senate investigation into the alleged fake agency for now, while judicial proceedings and law enforcement investigations continue.
