Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over the ongoing leadership crisis at the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), describing the situation as a serious failure of governance and presidential authority.
Atiku’s reaction followed reports that a key ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, allegedly refused to vacate office after being removed from his position at the agency.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Atiku said the development portrayed a disturbing breakdown of discipline within the Federal Government, arguing that no public official should disregard a lawful directive from the presidency and remain in office.
He maintained that the incident raised fundamental questions about the President’s ability to enforce decisions taken by his administration and ensure compliance among political appointees.
According to the former Vice President, if a presidential directive can be openly ignored without consequences, it reflects a deeper governance crisis that undermines public confidence in government institutions.
Atiku argued that the continued occupation of the office by the removed official amounted to a challenge to the authority of the President and the rule of law.
He called on the Federal Government to immediately restore order by enforcing its decisions and ensuring that public institutions are governed in accordance with the law.
The opposition leader further stated that if the President could not guarantee obedience to lawful directives issued by his administration, he should take responsibility for the situation.
The BCDA leadership dispute has generated political controversy, with opposing camps offering different interpretations of the legality of the removal and the subsequent refusal to relinquish office.
The matter is expected to remain a subject of political and legal debate as stakeholders continue to press their respective positions.
