A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the arrest of Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), after he failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment.
Justice Muhammed Umar issued a bench warrant for Adeyemi’s arrest following his absence in court when the matter was called. The judge directed security agencies to apprehend him and produce him before the court to answer to the charges against him.
Adeyemi is facing multiple criminal charges filed by the Nigeria Police Force, including allegations of forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence in connection with the activities of the purported government agency.
During the proceedings, Adeyemi’s lawyer informed the court that his client could not attend because he feared for his safety. However, the court rejected the explanation, stating that adequate security would be provided for any defendant appearing before it, and proceeded to issue the arrest warrant.
The case centres on allegations that Adeyemi falsely presented himself as the head of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, an organisation the Federal Government has maintained was never legally established.
Investigators allege that forged documents were used to portray the organisation as an official government agency and to give credibility to its operations.
The Federal Government has distanced itself from the organisation, reiterating that it has no legal backing and warning members of the public against dealing with individuals claiming to represent it.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter pending the arrest and production of the defendant for arraignment on the charges against him.
