Former Borno State Governor and politician, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has explained why he believes former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi cannot become Nigeria’s president.

Speaking during a television interview, Sheriff argued that Obi lacks the national political appeal and broad-based support required to win a presidential election in Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria’s political landscape requires any presidential aspirant to build strong alliances across the country’s diverse regions, ethnic groups and political interests.

Sheriff also alleged that Obi’s political positions and public statements have created doubts among some Nigerians about his ability to unite the country, insisting that national unity remains a critical factor in electing a president.

He further claimed that Obi’s political strategy would not be sufficient to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election, regardless of the support he enjoys in certain parts of the country.

The former governor maintained that winning Nigeria’s presidency goes beyond popularity on social media or regional support, stressing that success depends on building a nationwide political structure capable of attracting votes across all geopolitical zones.

Sheriff also criticised Obi’s role within the opposition coalition, arguing that the former Labour Party presidential candidate would face significant challenges in expanding his political base ahead of the next general election.

His comments come as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with major parties and opposition groups positioning themselves for what is expected to be another fiercely contested presidential race.

Peter Obi has not officially responded to Sheriff’s remarks. However, the former presidential candidate has consistently maintained that his focus remains on promoting good governance, accountability and national development while engaging with Nigerians across the country.

Political observers expect debates over the strengths and weaknesses of leading presidential hopefuls to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum. (Tribune Online)
