United States President Donald Trump has criticised Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accusing her of lacking courage over her refusal to support military action against Iran.
Trump, in an interview with an Italian newspaper, expressed disappointment with Meloni’s stance, saying she had failed to back U.S. efforts amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The U.S. leader also faulted her decision not to allow the use of Italian military facilities for operations linked to the crisis and her broader reluctance to align with Washington’s strategy.

The comments mark a sharp departure from what had been a close relationship between both leaders, with Meloni previously regarded as one of Trump’s key European allies.
Italy has, however, maintained a cautious position on the conflict, prioritising diplomatic engagement and warning about the potential economic and security consequences of further escalation.
Meloni has also publicly distanced her government from aggressive military actions, stressing the need for stability and the protection of civilian populations amid rising tensions.

The disagreement highlights growing divisions among Western allies over the Iran crisis, with several European countries showing reluctance to fully support the U.S. approach.
Analysts say the fallout could have broader implications for transatlantic relations, as Europe increasingly pushes for de-escalation while Washington maintains a more hardline posture.
