TRIPOLI — At least nine bodies of migrants have been recovered from the shores of Tajoura, an eastern suburb of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, following a boat mishap, authorities have said.
The Tripoli branch of the Red Crescent recovered the bodies over two days after the boat reportedly capsized off the coast.
The bodies were found at Tajoura, located about 22 kilometres from central Tripoli, according to the Red Crescent.
Local authorities said the boat was believed to have been carrying about 19 people, raising fears that more victims could be recovered as search operations continue.
Tripoli Red Crescent media officer, Muad Zurgani, said the organisation was continuing its search and recovery efforts in coordination with relevant authorities.
The Red Crescent said the operation was being conducted under difficult field conditions and required sustained efforts as well as an urgent humanitarian response.
The incident highlights the continuing dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean through irregular and often hazardous routes.
Search and recovery operations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the full number of people involved in the boat accident.
