A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned proceedings in a high-profile suit seeking the deregistration of several political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The case, instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators, challenges the continued recognition of the affected political parties, alleging that they failed to meet constitutional requirements relating to electoral performance and political relevance.

The matter was initially scheduled for judgment, but proceedings were halted following a stay of proceedings obtained by the Accord Party at the Court of Appeal. As a result, the trial court postponed its judgment and indicated that a new date for further proceedings would be communicated to all parties.

The plaintiffs argue that the political parties named in the suit have not satisfied the constitutional thresholds required to maintain their registration and should therefore be deregistered. They contend that allowing such parties to continue operating places unnecessary pressure on the electoral system and complicates election administration.

However, the affected parties have consistently opposed the suit, maintaining that the legal action lacks merit and raising objections to both the procedure and interpretation of the constitutional provisions relied upon by the plaintiffs.

The latest adjournment means the legal battle over the status of the affected political parties will continue pending further directives from the courts. Observers say the outcome could have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections.

With appeals and counter-appeals already filed, attention is now focused on the appellate courts and the eventual determination of the constitutional questions raised in the suit.
